Everyday we come across situations when we have to make
decisions. Sometimes the choice is obvious & other times it is tricky. It
is at these tricky situations, we seek opinions & advices. What turns out
to be more interesting in this case is– every Tom, Dick and Harry has opinions
and advices to offer. Advices may come solicited or unsolicited, warranted or unwarranted,
from known or unknown, experienced or novices. What makes the difference is– Do
the person offering advice has to bear the repercussions of the actions taken?
Randy Paush in his famous presentation ‘The last lecture’
said, “Experience is what one gets when one doesn’t get what one wants to get.”
We must always learn from peoples’ experience and not always set to reinvent
the wheel. One’s mistake could be taken as a caution for other. Experiences
from learned, optimistic, pragmatic could come handy in situations where they themselves have excelled. For example, while preparing for an exam: on one side where there is no substitute for hard work on the other study techniques, tips, important topics, resources to be followed etc. can be learnt from the experiences seniors who have excelled in the exams. Having mentioned it, there is no denying the fact that every individual is different and an approach which might have worked for one may not necessarily work for others. Individual approach is prime and suggestions and advises should only be implemented to better the existing strategies.
We have a hoard of books, blogs(like this one) and quotations on motivation but when it comes to reality; can just going through the sources make one successful. Stephen R Covey's bestseller '7 habits of highly effective people' is a must read recommend in corporate circle but it doesn't necessarily dividend into as many successful individuals.
One's approach towards decision making must take into consideration the broad spectrum of causes and effects involved in the matter. Scrutinize every aspect and look for improvements through past experiences, experience from others and existent best methods. While we must be open to suggestions and advises, we must weight the pros and cons from our own perspective. Being a good listener is a virtue but just listening without analysing may hamper our own creativity and decision taking abilities.
